Fire Pit Safety Tips

Many cherished summer nights are spent around a fire pit with friends and family. Before the sunset gets any longer, it’s best to refresh the basics of fire safety before lighting the match.

There are many fire pit safety tips that are necessary for both new and veteran patio party hosts. Fire danger can arrive in seconds, so make sure to review fire pit safety tips. Doing so can ensure you get the most enjoyment out of a fire pit while ensuring the safety of friends and family.

Location, Location, Location

One of the most important fire pit safety tips is to choose the correct location to place the fire pit. Always make sure to place the fire pit on level ground. Also, try to keep the pit on a noncombustible surface, such as concrete. In addition, be sure to keep the fire approximately 20 feet away from any nearby building, homes, and even dry plants during the summer. Proper distance measurements can be found by asking local authorities.

Keep the Fire in the Open

Be sure to operate a fire pit in an open area, with absolutely no overhang from buildings or trees. Spaces that are partially enclosed can also add danger to the fire pit location. It is also best to surround any fire pit, even gas, with noncombustible materials including sand, stone, and bricks.

Know What is Being Burned

Items other than wood should not be used as fuel in a wood fire. In addition, any item other than the gas or propane should never be placed in a fire that doesn’t use wood. Construction lumber, or wood that hasn’t been seasoned for at least six months can release toxic fumes in a fire pit. It is best to purchase wood from a local retailer. Gasoline or lighter fluid should never be used to start a fire.

Invest in Safety Measures

Understanding what is needed to put out a fire is just as important and the necessities needed to start a fire. When letting a fire burn out on its own, be sure to use the surface cover provided by the fire pit to extinguish the flames. Be sure to turn off the gas on a fire pit before attempting any other methods of extinguishing. It is also important to have a separate fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies. Check with the manufacturer’s instructions provided with fire pit purchase to find the best ways to extinguish the fire.
